✯REVIEW✯ "Outlier: Rebellion (Outlier #1) by Daryl Banner

Synopsis
“Those in power will do whatever they can to get away with everything they can.”

Every citizen in Atlas, the last city on the planet, is born with a unique, special ability, and no one sleeps past the age of two.

Except for Wick Lesser who, at seventeen, still sleeps. Hiding this rare ability from the world, his father, who can calculate futures, trains him in self-defense and combat while his healing-gifted mother works an unglamorous job in the muds and keeps his secret safe with the help of Wick’s older brothers. The Lesser family of the ninth ward slums manages to keep afloat, suffering under the corrupt, greed-driven Kingship of the Lifted City.

But not for long.

In the first installment of the Outlier series, Wick’s unassuming slumborn life soon explodes into a full-speed adventure of danger, betrayal, and self-discovery when he secretly joins an underground rebel movement working to take down the oppressive ruling power. But the task is far from easy, and there are more adversaries than Wick can count. Not to mention the complication of an intense, unplanned attraction ... to someone on the wrong side of the rebellion.

Powerful forces are gathering to put an end to the uprising, including the city’s elite crew of law-enforcers called Guardian, of which Wick’s own two eldest brothers are sworn members, and all corners of the slums grow ever restless: a lustful boy with blackened eyes leads a violent street gang, with Wick’s younger brother as his newest recruit. A cunning orphaned girl whose ability is to be unseen, sees everything. And high up in the Lifted City, a privileged and wealthy boy yearns for an exciting new life in the slums.

Their world is at a precipice of great change. No one is safe. The rebellion has begun.

*** Contains adult themes, M/F and M/M sexuality, and violence.

4 - 4.5 Stars!
This book was pretty sweet! I am a HUGE fan of Daryl's writing. The first book I read by him was The Beautiful Dead, which is one of my favorite books. It was so unique and different from anything I had ever read before. While completely different from The Beautiful Dead, Outlier: Rebellion was just as unique and left me wanting more. Seriously, I was pretty bummed out when I hit the last page. So many things, for me, were left unanswered and I am DYING to know what will happen next in this series.

Outlier: Rebellion was an urban fantasy/dystopian novel told from various POV's. The prologue itself gripped you and had you itching for more of what was to come. I will admit that in the beginning, I was a little thrown off with just how many characters POV's there were, and was finding it a tad difficult to remember who was who. The more I read, the more I got to know the characters and I really ended up loving getting to hear the voices of every single one of them. While each and every one of the characters had their own storyline going on, the book was structured so that they were all linked together in one way or another which I thought to be very creative (and not easy to do in my opinion). This was one of the major plusses for me while reading this book. Nothing was just randomly thrown in to fill up space… every person and event had a specific purpose in the story giving you a smaller, more detailed look into what made up the whole.

A few parts were a bit slow moving for me, however they were vital to the story, and things would not have made as much sense if they had been omitted. The only negative for me overall was that the story felt like it was building up to a BIG occurrence…one that would have a huge bang just like the prologue, but for me there was not that big wow factor after the buildup. The story itself was great, but I would have liked to of seen a stronger ending. However, that being said, there are so many things that can happen in book two with the way things were left off, that I am very excited to see which way the story will go from here, and am hoping to get the big WOW that I was hoping for.

The story revolves around the people in the slums (the poor and the workers) and the people of the lifted city (the wealthy and privileged). These two groups of people do not like each other, and this causes much tension and drama. People in the slums are beginning to rebel, and some want to see the lifted city fall. But rebellion comes with a price that not all may be willing to pay.

Each and every person in the slums & the Lifted City have what is called a Legacy (which is basically a special ability). Some are more powerful and intense than others. Walking through walls, becoming invisible, calculating the future through numbers… these are some examples of the Legacies we encounter throughout the story. I thought this was a very cool concept and love the importance of how these Legacies played into the story. The one legacy which I did not fully understand was that of Anwick's father. He could calculate the future through numbers. I am really hoping to hear more about how this works because I am still a little confused about this.

One of my favorite things in this book was the relationship that formed between Anwick (a slumborn who is the ONLY person over the age of two which still sleeps) and Athan (a boy from the lifted city who dreams about living in the slums). This was the first time I read a M/M relationship and I really loved these two characters together. I am DYING to know what is going to become of these two. Will they find a way to be together, or will their different lives tear them apart?

So many questions, so many directions which this story can go from here. To say that I am excited for book two would be quite an understatement. Daryl has a way of capturing the readers mind from page one in his books. He has the ability to take a concept that has been done in the past, twisting it and adding to it and turning it into a completely unique idea. He comes up with some of the most creative story lines I have ever encountered, and I cannot wait to see what he has in store for us readers in the future.

EXCERPT:

Picking it up, still shaking in my hands, a number I don’t recognize crosses the screen. Wavering on whether or not I want to chance this being something at the house, I hit ignore because I don’t want to be bothered with my dad’s so-called business today. Then thoughts of someone raiding or maybe some loser found out where my dad’s operation is. Worse case, someone ratted him out. Figuring someone who I have programmed in my phone would have made the phone call to alert me, I wait to see if they leave a voicemail. Which they do—my phone vibrates a second later.

Clicking speaker, I place the black rectangle on my dresser while I gel my hair. My fingers are manipulating each strand, placing it in the perfect spot when her voice comes across. My hands stop mid-air and I my eyes fixate on the phone. Closing my eyes, that sweet sound that’s only lived in my dreams the past years still unglues me to the core.   “Um … Dex. I’m in town and … um … I was wondering … if maybe we could … um … talk.” Her voice is practically shaking from the awkwardness of the phone call.

“HULK!” Brady screams again. Debating in my head what I should do, I could easily claim ignorance that I never got the call. Say that I was already out of town. Excuses run through my head as to why I would leave her wherever she is. Then the images of her alone, or worse, not. Knowing even with the distance that has formed between us over the years, I could never, would never, not go to her if she needed me.

Walking out my door, I peer over the railing to a sour Brady. “Man, I gotta do something. You guys go without me,” I shout down.

“What is so damn important?” he asks, sensitive to the fact he can tell something’s off with me. Brady is like the father of our friends, protective of us all.

“A friend needs me,” I say, remaining vague. If Brady knew the half of what I did when I leave this house, he’d probably have an anxiety attack.

He stands there staring up at me and wavers at the door. Probably counting in his head how long he has before Sadie, his fiancé, comes in search of him. “What’s up, man?” he asks, stepping up a few stairs.

“I’m not sure yet. I need to make a call.” I’m honest with him because Brady has a sense of comfort about him. Although, I’m fairly certain our secrets are shared with Sadie, he keeps things mostly to himself.

“Do that, and we’ll wait.” He jogs back down the steps, and the front door shuts behind him.

Sitting on my bed, I bite my lip. It’s been so long. Not that she hasn’t crossed my mind; I’m not sure a day goes by that I don’t wonder where she is and what’s she’s doing. I question why she left and never answered my calls. The guilt that I somehow left her behind always resonating inside somewhere within me even when she’s the one who disappeared. The small piece of electronics sits in my hands like a ten-pound weight. There’s no turning back, no erasing from my mind once I press that call icon.

Pushing back my fear, I press the call button, release a deep breath and bring the phone up to my ear. She answers on the first ring, confirming something is seriously wrong. “Dex,” she answers. Another stab of the knife that she still has my number programmed, but I don’t have her obviously changed number.

“Chrissy?” I say her name out loud for the first time in four years. How can her name seem foreign on my tongue?

The line is quiet for a few seconds before she continues. “Hi. I’m in Western … at this place called The Loft. Could you come down here?” she asks.

✯Blog Tour Review✯Hidden Barriers (Barriers #2) by Sara Shirley

  http://amzn.to/1sVkhDH

Hidden Barriers is book two in the Barriers Series and is considered a stand-alone and doesn't contain a cliffhanger. Some scenes do overlap with Frozen Barriers. It's suggested to read Frozen Barriers first, simply to understand the characters history more.
Josh & Sam's Story

Love has been hiding for too long. What happens when it reveals itself?

Josh Page, a Massachusetts State Trooper, wants nothing more than to put his first love behind him. His career is all he’s ever known for the last ten years. Seeing her is a constant reminder of what he could have had if he had not put his career first years ago.

Relationships and dating women have never been part of his lifestyle. He continues to have meaningless sex with women as an attempt to distance himself from his past. That is until he opens the door and a sassy roller derby girl stares back up at him.

*****
Samantha Daley’s past haunts her. After college, she spends years building a new life with new friends, roller derby, and a bustling business under her feet. Her past suddenly comes rushing back after just one phone call.

Afraid to love, she never imagines a life where one man can turn her world inside out and make her reevaluate what she wants in her future. Almost instantly, she’s attracted to the man in front of her. He pushes her trust to a new level and is willing to take a chance with her.

Will Sam be able to handle the reminders of her troubled past enough for her to be with Josh, or will it be Josh’s secrets that threaten to tear them apart in the end?

**For mature audiences. 18+. This book contains sexual and abusive situations, and strong language.**

 ✯✯5 Heart Warming Stars!!✯✯

Where am I supposed to start? I read Frozen Barriers and fell in love with Emily & Jeremy. I fell in love with their story and Jeremy's family was the best of the best. When I found out the next book was going to be about Jeremy's older brother Josh. I was stoked!! But, I was not expecting was to fall in love with Josh & Sam MORE then Emily & Jeremy. Yet, I totally did.

Josh can not escape Sue his first love. They broke up years ago. But, she became best friends with his younger sister Courtney. Now, she's pregnant with his brother's best friend Dave. His parents have basically adopted her. Like they do with all their children's friends. Josh doesn't plan on settling down and have a family with the white picket fence. Instead he keeps to the one night stands. He might keep them a little longer. But, that's it and he doesn't plan on changing it.

Samantha AKA Sam AKA Sammy Sweet Cheeks is running from her past too. After the worst experience of her life she moved. Only her parents & younger brother Drew knows where she's at. She wants to keep it that way. After her ex-boyfriend Stone, Sam never wants to be with another guy for the rest of her life. Sam owns a successful wine bar called Vines and is on a roller derby team. She lives with her roller derby team. Sam doesn't realize just how strong she is. I think one of the reasons why I love her so much is her favorite drink is Jack Daniels. A girl after my own heart!

After Sam & Josh literally bump into each other. Josh is instantly intrigued with the feisty girl who's dressed all crazy in the middle of winter. After they bump into each other. Josh thinks about Sam all the time.

Josh wants to get to know Sam. He hasn't been this crazy about a girl in 10 years. Sam can't seem to keep Josh out of her mind. All her derby girls and brother think it's time for her to move on. To find love. And, the fact he's a cop makes him even better.

Both Josh & Sam are falling head over heals in love with each other. Yet, Sam pushes Josh away every chance she gets. Josh on the other hand is totally confused with what he's feeling. He hasn't felt this kind of feelings in forever. He's falling deeper and deeper for Sam then he ever thought possible.

Josh & Sam finally tell each other everything!! They both agree that their feelings are real. Josh & Sam agree to give it everything that got and go from there.

Josh is so so sexy. He knows Sam has a major sweet tooth. He'll show up with enough candy for cavities to fill 5 people's teeth. LOL.. Sam & Josh are perfect together!!

Just when things in Sam & Josh's life are finally starting to come together. They are the happiest they've ever been. Then, everything comes crashing down around them.

Josh has to really let Sam in 110%. He must finally let his past into his present. But, he doesn't know how too. Sam's past comes back full force. Now, she's lost. She's a shell of herself.

Josh & Sam and all their friends and family must fight. Fight to keep Sam & everyone she cares about safe.Sam has to get over her insecurities. Josh must let out his feelings. There is definitely a lot these 2 must get over in order to make it work.

Now, even though this is considered a standalone. I strongly, strongly urge you to read Frozen Barriers first. Because, there was enough of Jeremy & Emily's story that was in it coming from Josh's POV. Which I loved!!

This is definitely a must read series!! Between Courtney (Josh & Jeremy's younger sister)and his parents. Then, Sam's brother & derby friends. You'll love every one of them. Sara made me really feel everything the characters were feeling. I still can't believe it's her 2nd book. She;s def a author that is going to be on the #1 sellers lists. Because, she's a natural!!

JOSH
The feeling of sleeping in your own bed is comforting in and of itself. When you fall asleep in the arms of a beautiful woman, that’s peace. The moment you wake up next to the woman who’s quickly taking your heart in her hands, comfort and peace cease to exist. This is absolute euphoria.
I’ve been lying here watching her sleep for a while now. The sun has been slowly creeping its way into the room through her windows, illuminating the glass chandelier over her bed. Rainbow prisms dance against her walls as I gently push aside a stray hair, so I can just watch her sleep.
I already knew I was quickly falling for her, but after last night, I knew she was it for me. Yeah, true, we’ve only known each other for a short time, but when you know, you know. There is still so much about her that’s a mystery, but I could spend the rest of my days willing to find out.
Lying here, facing her, I push that pesky stray hair from her face again and wonder how it was that any man, let alone her ex-boyfriend, could ever want to hurt her. The heinous things he did sickens me. What could have run through his head to want to take her life? She’s the most angelic creature, and I have to wonder what could have been.
Where would I be now if Stone actually succeeded in killing her that night? My body tenses immediately at the idea of her not being here with me. Even now, I don’t have any power to help keep that asshole behind bars, but I’m definitely going to find out everything I can about the fucker, and I will protect Sam the best I can. If that means giving my life for her, then I’ll do it. If I already took an oath to serve and protect strangers, I will gladly put my life on the line for her.

SAM
I move away from Josh who continues to talk on his phone with my brother. I scuffle my heavy legs through the room over to the kitchen cabinet I need. Josh watches me with concern written all over his face, but I know there isn’t anything I can say to make him leave. If I thought not having space before this was bad, unless by some miracle they find Stone soon, there won’t be any way I can handle Josh’s overprotective nature for another week.
I pull open the cabinet and grab the bottle of Jack, foregoing the shot glass. I shut the cabinet door and twist the top off the squared bottle. As I bring the bottle to my mouth, the stinging smell hits me first before I tilt my head back and chug until I can’t take the burn anymore. I straighten my head, coughing as the burn wears off in my throat until I feel the warmth coat its way into my system. Only this isn’t what I need right now.
I stare at the bottle in my hand and start laughing hysterically before screaming at the top of my lungs. As I continue to scream and laugh, tears well in my eyes, but not before I catch sight of the girls rounding the corner to see what’s going on. Josh stands there, silently watching me mentally break down. Nick storms through the front door, most likely thinking the worst has happened, considering his hand is already on his holster ready to draw his gun. All of them think I’m losing my shit and quite possibly I am.
For three years I was safe and happy with my new life and friends. I had just found love and a future with a man who was willing to deal with all my bullshit, and in less than a few weeks, I’m back to where I was three years ago. Everything I worked so hard to overcome is disappearing in a flash.

About the Author:
I'm just a small town girl with a heart for the country life. I'm very shy and pretty much a loner, but my writing helps me be more outgoing and talk to various people that I would otherwise have a hard time approaching. I don't write for the money or the fame, but rather to tell a story that needs to be told; whether that is my story or a character's story. As a lot of people know, from my various interviews, I started writing to express my anger and hurt over the bullying that I experienced in High School, but eventually I just realized that I loved to tell stories. I was born in Texas, grew up and still live in Upstate New York, and want to retire in Ireland.

  excerpt

The heat of their bodies mingled as one. With each breath, Aleksender drank in the sweet essence of his beloved ward. His mind swam with unorthodox visions and desires. He inclined his head, lost to the power of her nearness, entranced by everything that was Sofia Rose. “Alek, my Alek …” Each word infused Aleksender with a delicious and undeniable warmth. Intoxicated by roses and wintertime, he found it difficult to speak, difficult to think. Breathless, he swallowed and met the haunting depths of her eyes. “Please,” she dreamily murmured, “I want you to kiss me again…”
