I often stare at the
walls and wonder what’s beyond them.
The Elders tell me that nothing but sin, sadness, and disease lie beyond the wall.
Sometimes I hear things, noises that are strange to me. They’re often faint, and when I ask the Elders what those sounds are, they tell me they are the tortured souls of thousands of people behind the gates of hell. I don’t know what they mean.
I dream of leaving these walls, but the Elders insist this is the only place we’re safe. They talk about danger, hatred, and the devil himself waiting just beyond. They tell us the walls were built to keep us safe.
Although I believe the Elders, I want to see the outside world for myself.
But there’s no way out.
Or so I thought...

Excerpt
He grabs
the back of my neck, squeezes, and pulls me along to the bath. He dunks my head
into the water, I try to scream and fight him. As I inhale, I take in water,
unable to catch my breath because my head is held under.
He lifts my
head, and I try to suck air into my lungs. “Stop!” I manage to splutter.
The voice
plays in the background. “We are your family. Beyond the wall is death. Beyond
the wall is evil. You will die if you leave. Only we can protect you.”
He dunks my
head straight under the water again. I barely have the chance to get air into
my lungs. I’m trying to fight him, clawing at his arms to let me up. I try to
scream again, but I’m only taking in more water. My body is in agony, my chest
is exploding with fire and sizzling pain.
He lifts my
head, leans down and whispers, “We are your family. Beyond the wall is death.
Beyond the wall is evil. You will die if you leave. Only we can protect you.”
“No, you’re
not! Family doesn’t do this.”
He
chuckles, then adds, “You’re a hard one to break.” Then quickly submerges my
head again under the water. I try to fight him again. But I feel his other hand
come up to the back of my head, holding me under.
The words
are loud, and I can still hear them. But the panic inside my body is enough to
fuel me to hold strong. “We are (not) your family. Beyond the wall is (life
not) death. Beyond the wall is (good and not) evil. You will die (live) if you
leave. Only we can (won’t) protect you.”
He lifts my
head. I try to breathe in, knowing what he’s going to continue doing. I save my
words and strength, it’s no use fighting with him. Not when he’s got control
over me just by his mere size and power.
Author Bio
STRONG, BRAVE AND COURAGEOUS
CHARACTERS.
**Write something worth reading**
I'm Margaret and I'm a self-published author.
Recently I was
fortunate in obtaining New York Times best-selling status on my YA/NA book -
Ugly, and my YA book - Mistrust.
My last six books have been YA and I'm completely in love with the genre. I love being able to communicate with people through my words and stories.
My writing genres all differ, but the one thing I keep consistent is my heroines. All my female lead characters are strong, gutsy and not the 'perfect' woman. While my books all have romantic elements in them, they aren't just about the romance. They're about finding strength, acceptance and making life long connections.
I hope you enjoy my stories as much as I have while writing them.
