Jeremy and Sierra, normally blunt as can be, struggle to find the right words to answer her. Ignite (Explosive #1)
Excerpt
“It’s fine, Jeremy. I promise. I have no problem being the Tod to your Copper. Or the Joey to your Dawson. That’s who I am.” She hesitated for a brief moment. “That’s who I’ll always be. You’re my best friend, Jeremy. It’s okay that you don’t see my boobs. Hell, it’s probably better that way.”
My stomach plummeted and if I was man enough to admit it, my eyes burned with an unexpected rush of tears. I stepped back, out of the streetlight so she couldn’t see me. It was a move she misinterpreted, but before I could find a single ounce of courage, she was waving goodbye and running into her house, leaving me there to watch her go.
Something I never wanted to do again.
It wasn’t until after Sierra left for Ohio and I had a chance to reflect on her words that I realized what she’d said. Dawson and Joey, as of right then, weren’t even speaking. Copper and Tod went their separate ways, and even though their friendship remained, they were still apart for the rest of their lives.
I didn’t want to be Copper anymore. I sure as hell didn’t want to be Dawson.
But it was too late. I’d lost my chance. I’d missed my window. Sierra was gone and there was nothing I could do about it.
Jenna was right.
I was an idiot.

✯Blog Tour Review w/Giveaway✯The Fall Up by Aly Martinez

Maybe there’s only one direction to go when two people fall
in love at rock bottom—up.

NOW AVAILABLE!
Amazon US: http://amzn.to/1Gt7jsy

Synopsis:

I wanted to jump.
He made me fall.

As a celebrity, I lived in the public eye, but somewhere along the way, I’d lost myself in the spotlight.

Until he found me.

Sam Rivers was a gorgeous, tattooed stranger who saved my life with nothing more than a simple conversation.

But we were both standing on that bridge for a reason the night we met. The secrets of our pasts brought us together—and then tore us apart.

Could we find a reason to hold on as life constantly pulled us down?

Or maybe there’s only one direction to go when two people fall in love at rock bottom—up.

 ✯✯5 Bright Stars!!!✯✯

I feel like I been waiting forever to get my hands on this book. Man, it was worth the wait. It was everything I expected from Aly Martinez and then add a bunch more on top if it. Sam Rivers is not your typical book boyfriend. He is so much more. And, Levee Williams.. Man, she is not your typical pop princess who has the money and the looks. She is so much more.

Sam and Levee meet in the middle of a rainy night on top of a bridge. They have been going there a few night before Sam approached Levee. They're both up there for different reasons. Yet, still haunted by demons. Sam has no idea who Levee is but can tell she is trying to hide. They have an instant connection. Night after night they meet on the bridge.

Every night they spend on that bridge they talk a little bit more. Sam keeps wishing he won't see Levee on that bridge. But, loves getting to spend time with her anyway. Sam finally gets Levee off that bridge and into his bed. Hahaha maybe not exactly like that but pretty close.

Sam has lost a lot of  close people in his life. He has felt responsible for them. Sam doesn't want to loose anybody else. It's one of the reasons why I loved Sam. He never once tried to change Levee. All Sam wants is what's best for Levee. Levee has  a lot going on. She can't seem to see straight nowadays. Between the concerts and spending as much time as possible making sick children smile, Levee is loosing sight of who she is. She keeps trying to say she's not sure why she keeps going on that bridge, but deep down she does. Ever since Sam has come into her life Levee is seeing things clearer. Levee is planning on getting herself help.

This book was beautifully written. Aly handled the suicide topic very well. There was laughter, joking, friendship and seriousness all wrapped up in one book. Every relationship whether it friendship, family or romantic was perfect. Even though Sam and Levee had demons and issues they were not afraid to ask or go for help. This is in my top 2015 must reads!!

Excerpt:

“Thank fuck!” Sam said, swinging the door open before Devon even had the car in park.
“Oh, this isn’t my place. We’re just dropping Devon off. I’m about twenty minutes across town?”  I tossed him a sugary smile then boldly shifted my hand into his lap, purposely brushing the bulge under his denim.
Grabbing my wrist, he narrowed his eyes and called out, “Devon, I’m gonna need to borrow a bedroom.”
I burst out laughing as Devon cursed loudly.
“Fine. This is my place. No smoking inside though,” I snipped as I climbed from the SUV.
“You better have some seriously exciting extracurricular activities to keep me distracted, then.”
“I have Ping-Pong!”
“Not exactly what I was thinking.” He mischievously cocked his head. “But I guess paddles and balls are as good a start as any.” Dipping down, he hoisted me over his shoulder. “Point me to the Ping-Pong table, my lady.”
I didn’t. I laughed hysterically as he carried me inside. Then I directed him to my bedroom instead.
I heard Devon locking up the house as Sam deposited me on the bed.
“Jesus. This view.”  He pushed the curtains back. “Why the hell would you ever go up to the bridge when you have this here?”
“I don’t know,” I answered, pulling my earrings off and placing them on my nightstand.
Oh, but I knew. It might not have been what had originally sent me up that bridge, but it was why my feet carried me back every night. And that very reason was currently standing in front of me with entirely too much clothing on.
“You want a beer?” I asked, sliding my shoes off.
“Nah, I’m good.” He faced me, and I could tell something was off with his demeanor. He didn’t inch any closer. Instead, his lips were tight and his eyes uncomfortably flashed around the room.
It suddenly didn’t feel like Sam standing in front of me at all.
He felt like a stranger who had just come face-to-face with Levee Williams.
Damn it.
“Why are you looking at me like that? Are you about to freak out?” I whispered, nervously moistening my lips.
He shoved his hands into his pockets. “I’m not really sure yet. But I’m gonna need you to stop licking your lips long enough for me to figure it out.” His mouth cracked into a wide grin, and my shoulders relaxed.
Now that was a flash of my Sam.
“Want to tell me what’s going on?” I asked.
“It’s just… I think this is the first time I’ve realized that you’re some big-time celebrity. I might be in over my head here, Designer Shoes.”
“I just make music, Sam.” I returned his smile and very slowly prowled in his direction. “Imagine how I feel though. You’re Samuel Nathan Rivers. A tough, tattooed furniture designer who makes six figures a year but is too afraid to tell his mommy he votes democratic.” I giggled as he frowned humorously. Stopping in front of him, I dragged a fingernail down his chest then teased the waistband of his jeans. “Have you considered that maybe I’m the one who’s in over her head here?” I leaned forward to nip at his lips, but he spun us around.
“Excellent point. I’m going to need you to try really hard to keep it together, Levee. You haven’t even seen my six-pack and huge cock, yet.” He smirked and attempted to return my nip, but I stepped out of his reach.
“You brought beer and chicken?” I feigned excitement.
That one corny joke was all it took to bring my Sam back completely.
With a sexy smile and a coy shrug, he seductively backed me toward the bed. “What can I say? I like to be prepared.”
“Clearly,” I breathed.
He moved in close so his lips were only a centimeter away, but for as much as I wanted him, it was agonizing. “Clearly,” he repeated, his smoky yet sweet breath breezing across my mouth.
His strong arm looped around my waist, tugging me against his chest, while I stared into his hooded eyes, eagerly waiting for him to make a move.
Any move.

Every move.

✯Blog Tour Review w/Giveaway✯The Wrath of Cain(The Syndicate Series #1)by Kathy Coopmans

Synopsis

Eloped at the age of eighteen. Separated at the age of eighteen. Disappeared at the age of eighteen. This is what happened to Calla Greer. Her perfect life was shattered on her wedding day when she caught her husband Cain with another woman just hours after they said I do. With her heart broken, she moves across the border to Windsor, Canada to get away from the nightmare she stumbled upon. Hell bent on going to college and fulfilling her dream of becoming a lawyer.

After six long years of still being married, Calla returns to Detroit to have Cain sign divorce papers.

Only Cain has changed.

He’s bitter, angry and for a good reason.

At least that’s what he’s been telling himself for the past six years.

Cain Bexley had fifteen minutes to destroy his marriage to protect the woman he loved.  He did the only thing he could think of to make her leave. He jumped in bed with a woman. Life at home was a lie. Lives were at risk.

People are not who they seem.

Not even Cain’s dad or Calla’s parents are who they say they are. When Calla shows up begging for a divorce. He shows her exactly who he is and no way in hell will he sign those papers.

What happens when six years later she returns? The only woman he has loved. A woman who has changed herself! When all the lies surface will she be able to forgive everyone she has trusted in her life or will Calla turn to the man who destroyed her?

✯ ✯5 Sizzling Hot Stars!!!✯✯

Man oh man Kathy Coopmans has done it to me again!! Every book of hers the men get hotter, sexier and more alpha. And, Cain was it!! This book has a little bit of everything in it.

Calla and Cain are so in love. Unfortunately, their fathers can't stand each other and forbid them to date. Well, Cain and Calla don't listen. They go and get married and plan on running away to college. But, life doesn't work out they we always want. When Calla goes to get Cain she finds him a not so good position. Calla didn't put up with it. Instead she ran off to Canada to live her life away from Cain. Six years later she's headed back to his MC compound with divorce papers to have him sign them.

All these years Cain has had his best friend Manny following her. There has been major issues with his MC The Sinners Revolution since before his father the President was killed. Cain's done his hardest to get it fixed and safe to brig his wife home where she belongs.

But, Calla beat him to it. Everybody knows Calla is his wife and if she shows up let her in and not out!! The chemistry between these two is instant and hotter then it's ever been. But, now there's a lot of anger, bitterness and hostility between them. Cain will not sign the divorce papers. I mean. Never. Instead he holds Calla hostage. Yes, you read that right. Hostage. For 2 reasons. 1 is to keep her safe until the threat with the MC is found and dealt with and 2 because he plans on winning her back. Cain tells Calla everything starting from right before she walked on him with that nasty bitch.

There is so much going on in this story that I can tell you. But, it wouldn't be fair to give it away. These two never grew out of love. They have no problem getting naked and man were they hot!! But, the trust was not so easy. Cain needs to earn back the trust and respect. But, that's not too easy either. He's the president and is expecting Calla to be his wife and respect, listen and obey him when they are around other people. Calla also learns that not only Cain has had secrets. But, her family aren't who she thought they were.

I literally couldn't put this book down once I opened it. Cain is one sexy alpha. But, has the sweetest side to him. Calla I give that girl major props. I know I couldn't of handled all the info that was dropped on her. But, her husband and family are who she loves. For me it was big on the MC side but definite mafia. Which I loved. I'm dying for the next book. Kathy Coopmans has a way to tell her stories. Which is why she's one of my favorites. I mark her books even before the synopsis is up. I stalk her on the regular. Cain and Calla are as good as the rest of the couples she has given me.

Excerpt

My brain finally catches up with the fact I’m naked in front of Cain for the first time in six years. I sit up in a rush of water and bring my knees to my chest, resting my chin on top of them.
“You... you shouldn’t be in here.”
“You wouldn’t answer me,” he says exasperatedly.
“Well, no shit. My head was underwater. That still doesn’t give you the right to just walk in here.”
“When you don’t answer me when I’m standing right outside of a wide open door, not to mention the fact this is my house... well, then I think I have every fucking right. Don’t you?”
“No, I don’t. You could have just peeked in and seen I was fine and waited. Was this some kind of ploy for you to get me right where you wanted me? Are you so afraid that the minute you turn your back on me I will up and try to leave? Are you going to watch my every move? Or did you have an ulterior motive in suggesting I shower, just so I could strip down naked and you could make damn sure I didn’t go anywhere? So tell me what the hell it is, because this back and forth, hot and cold game you’ve started is really starting to piss me the hell off!”
I glare up at him, not quite able to read his eyes.
What I do know is that the sexual tension between the two of us is so strong, it’s working triple overtime. There’s only one tiny little obstacle in our way... and that would be our past. The fact that I can’t trust him. He broke every bit of it the same day he broke my heart. One of us needs to give in, take charge so we can just fuck and move on.

✯Release Review w/Giveaway✯Ugly by Margaret McHeyzer

Title: Ugly
Author: Margaret McHeyzer
Genre: YA/NA
 Release Date: October 26, 2015

Blurb

If I were dead, I wouldn't be able to see.
If I were dead, I wouldn't be able to feel.
If I were dead, he'd never raise his hand to me again.
If I were dead, his words wouldn't cut as deep as they do.
If I were dead, I'd be beautiful and I wouldn't be so...ugly.

I'm not dead...but I wish I was.

 ✯5 Beautifully Ugly Stars!!!

I was nervous to read this. I was both mentally and physically abused so I went into this book with my guard up. I fell in love with Margaret when I read her book A Life Less Broken and Allyn she's still one of my all  time favorites. But, Ugly wow!!! It's a YA book and very dark on top of that. This is a must read.

Lily lives with her father. Her mother passed away. Her father is an unbelievably cruel, evil, violent, drunk ugly piece of crap. There I said it! He had no love for his daughter. And, unlike most stories they change after they loose the wife or husband depending on the story. But, not this one. All Lily knows is her parents telling her she is useless worthless dumb stupid and ugly. They've told her multiple times to just die.

Lily has grown up staying under the radar at home as well as in school. The only people who pay any attention to her are the few ladies at the thrift store. They have given her a few clothes that actually fit her and are not holey. They've also given her food to eat. Yes, food and clothes are things her father doesn't buy her. Lily doesn't think her live can get better. That is until she met him.

Trent. Lily meets Trent at the bus stop. Trent is nice. He's also very patient with Lily. he tells her she's pretty and brings her a flower. At first I was all like "YES!! Finally, a Prince for Lily" but I got smacked very quickly. Trent has a very jealous streak. He goes ape shit over a waiter looking at Lily. But, Trent is too quick to play it off. When things got bad for Lily at home it was Trent who was there to come and get her out and move her in with him and his parents. Her savior....

Years later Lily and Trent are married. They're living in a small apartment. Lily was working and going to college on a full scholarship until Trent convinced her it be best for her to quit school and really work while he goes to school to be a Dr. He's also taken over their finance's. Lily has enough money to take the bus back and forth to her job at the supermarket.

Lily has finally made a friend. Shayne. I loved her. There was so many times that Shayne tried getting Lily to open up to her. She knew something wasn't right with Lily and Trent. Lily was extremely extremely skinny. Yet, would call herself fat. Shayne always let Lily know she'd be there for her.

Lily goes to eat lunch one afternoon and sees a guy. A hot guy! They don't speak but something passes between them. When he opens the door for a lady she was taken back by how nice he was to a complete stranger. She doesn't realize then that it's not the last time she'll see him.

After years of torture from Trent he'd gotten to an all time low. Lily for the first time in her entire life stands up for herself and leaves. Lily goes to Shayne and Liam's house. They been going out since they worked together at the supermarket. The hot guy she saw he actually works at a hospital. His name is Max and he stutters from years of abuse when he was younger.Lily and Max become very very good friends. Even though Max has feelings for Lily he'll wait forever for her until she's ready. Lily is really liking Max but she's damaged.

Lily's whole life she been talked and treated like she's below trash.  But, her life has started to change. Her 2 bosses Peter and Dale are doing everything to help her. These guys go above and beyond to help her. Max, Shayne and Liam are also helping Lily with everything they can. For the first time in Lily's life where she has friends who are her family. But, it wasn't easy and won't be for awhile.

I cried so many times reading this! Margaret definitely did her homework on people who've been mentally and physically abused. When you're mentally abused you are brainwashed to not only think things. But, to believe them. Lily swore she was ugly, fat, stupid on top of other stuff. It doesn't go away easily if ever. It'll pop up in your head all the time. Margaret hit every nail on the head. It's a total dark ugly-cry read. But, Lily gets the ending the that she truly truly deserves. Lily is going to stick with me for a long time. Margaret is one of my favorites. Can't wait to read her next book.

Trailer

Prologue

It’s days like today I wish I was dead.

“Lily Anderson, you get your ugly ass out here right this minute. Don’t make me come after you,” Daddy screams.

He’s so angry. I knew the moment I heard him come home from work I was in for it. I was in my bedroom, lying on the floor trying to do my math. He slammed the front door so hard the windows in my room shook.

And then I knew, I knew I was in for it.

“Lily Anderson!” he yells again.

As soon as I heard him yell I ran to my hiding spot. I’m inside the closet in the hallway, wedged as far into the corner as I can get. Mom’s old coat hangs in front of me and I can still smell a faint waft of the perfume she used to wear.

“Lily Anderson!” he shouts. I can hear the anger in his voice and I can already feel the pain he’s going to inflict on me when he opens the closet door. I know what’s coming.

I close my eyes tight, scrunching them up so no light can seep through. I put my hands over my ears so I can’t hear him.

“I swear to God; if I have to find you, you will not sit for a month.”

My knees are folded into my chest. I’m trying to make myself small, invisible, so he forgets I’m here. I’m rocking myself, trying to block out what he’s saying.

School is safe. School is safe. School is safe. I keep repeating the mantra because in a few short hours I’ll be back at school. Maybe tomorrow I can go to the library after school, stay there until it closes and then sneak in after Dad’s passed out, because he’s had too much to drink.

It was never like this before. Ever.

I’m twelve years old and I can remember when Mom, Dad, and I were all happy. But that was years ago. It’s been a long time since there’s been any happiness in this house.

Well, before Mom died anyway, and not a day since.

Mom died when I was nine. I don’t remember much about her, except I remember her telling me how ugly I am. How life would be better if I was taken away from them. How I’ll never be anything, because I’m stupid and ugly.

Sometimes I dream happy things. Like me, Mom, Dad and a little blond-haired boy all going for a picnic. The sun beamed down on us as we played outside and laughed. We’d eat yummy sandwiches Mom made for us, and we’d drink homemade lemonade. We’d spend hours outside, laughing and talking and just having fun. Mom would tell me how pretty I am, and how much she loved me. She would play with my hair, braid it, and then we’d go and pick bright flowers to take home and put in a vase. Dad would smile and call us “his girls”, always kissing Mom and hugging me. Dad would put the little boy on his shoulders and run around the park, trying to catch the clouds.

I love those dreams, and I hold onto them; wishing they were real. But I’ve never had a mom like that, and my dad doesn’t talk much unless it’s with his fists, or to tell me how ugly and useless I am.

I feel him walking around the house. The floorboards creak and the vibrations from his footsteps come through the floor to where my bottom is. I close my eyes tighter and try and breathe as quietly as I can.

Please go away, Daddy. Please go away.

My heart is beating so fast. My hands are shaking and I’m trying really hard not to think about what’s going to happen the minute he opens the closet door.

Shhh, it’s so quiet. The only sound is my heart thrumming in my ears. Nothing else. Not a whisper, not a rattle…nothing.

Maybe Daddy’s left. Maybe he’s gone to the pub to have a few drinks. Maybe, just maybe, he’s left...forever.

I take a deep breath and just relax for a moment. My shoulders drop and I finally stop rocking.

Slowly I take my hands down from my ears, and I’m so happy because I can’t hear him yelling at me. I can’t hear him at all.

Gradually, I begin to unscrunch my eyes from the way I’ve tightly closed them. But something’s not right. There’s light coming into the closet.

I don’t even get a chance to open them fully before a rough hand reaches in, latches onto my ponytail and yanks.

“I told you it’d be worse for you if I had to find you,” Dad says, as he drags me out of the closet by my hair.

I’m desperately trying to hold onto my head so he doesn’t rip my hair out. My feet are trying to find traction on the dirty floorboards.

“Please, Daddy. Please. You’re hurting me,” I begin sobbing as I plead with him.

“Then your ugly ass should’ve come when I called you, you stupid bitch. You’re fucking worthless, you ugly idiot,” he says. But now his voice is calm as he continues to drag me toward the family room.

That’s when he’s most scary. When his voice is low and his eyes are filled with hate.

He throws me against the side of the sofa and takes a step back to look at me.

I look up and can see he’s the angriest I’ve ever seen him. “You dumb, ugly piece of shit,” he says, as he paces back and forth in front of me.

“Sorry, Daddy. Whatever I did, I’m so sorry.” I cower into myself, trying to make myself as small as possible.

“You’re just too fucking stupid, aren’t you?” he spits toward me as he brings his hand up to scratch at his chin.

“I’m sorry,” I say again. Tears are falling hot and fast down my cheeks. My head hurts from where he was pulling my hair, but I don’t dare try to rub the spot.

“You ugly fuck.” He kicks a boot into my leg.

The pain is instant and my leg feels like it’s shattered. “Please, Daddy,” I beg again, burying my face into my hands.

But ‘please’ never seems to work.

Nothing does.

I’ve just got to take the beatings, because that’s what stupid, ugly girls do.

There's something about the written word that is pure magic.

Possibly it's the fact there are 26 letters in the English alphabet, and they can create something so beautiful or so empowering they're capable to change our lives.

How important is it that we break suit and stretch our minds?

I like to think of myself as 'unique'. My stories aren't for everyone, and sometimes I may push what you believe to be 'normal'.

Normal is subjective.

I prefer to be known as a person who's never been 'bound by custom' but is 'unique by choice'.

Excerpt
Flor throws herself into work the next week, trying her best to forget about that touch. She does what she can to keep Paco and his inviting eyes at arms’ length as well. What for? She chides herself. In case Collin accepts her invitation for coffee? Even she has to laugh at that. But what then? It’s only ten weeks until she leaves for Smith. Ten weeks isn’t a lot of time, but when you’re young, it’s certainly long enough to try to get to know someone. “Are you interested in coming over tonight?” Paco asks Flor as she helps him sort out semen samples in the lab. She closes the door to the small fridge and smiles. “To watch a movie?” He chuckles and removes his gloves. Leaning toward her he says, “I was thinking along the lines of wine and music. But if you prefer a movie . . . .” Flor shakes her head. “No to the movie?” Paco asks, running his hands through his thick hair. Flor watches, mesmerized by his smooth manner. “I don’t get it, Flor. One moment, I think you’d like to get to know me, then the next, you act like you don’t.” He steps toward her. She remains frozen, his gaze holding her in place, her eyes watching his gorgeous lips move. What did he just say? “Usually I can tell when a woman is attracted to me, but you, I get mixed signals.” He reaches out and runs a finger along the back of her hand. Nope, not even a flicker of electricity. Flor looks down and doesn’t answer. But still she’s extremely attracted to him. Her panties are wet, and it’s a struggle to control her breathing. The Argentinian draws his long finger up to her chin. “You are incredibly beautiful, Flor,” he whispers. His face inches closer to hers, his blue/gray eyes searching hers. He wants permission and a part of her is screaming to give it as much as it’s screaming for her to leave. She closes her eyes and parts her lips, knowing it won’t feel right. She wants him to realize it too. Paco’s lips are as soft as she imagined them to be. He reaches his hand around her neck and pulls her body to him, his tongue entering and searching for more. It feels better than Flor even imagined when she lay awake touching herself, picturing him covering her body with his mouth and tongue. All of a sudden she’s on fire. Flor reaches up, her hands on either side of his face. Their kiss deepens as his hands begin to roam, slowly unleashing the desire she’s felt since she first laid eyes on him. The kiss feels incredible. He’s truly an expert at reading a woman. His tongue traces her lips before biting down softly on her bottom lip. The sensation travels straight down to her sex, pulsing with need. That’s what this is now. Pure, unadulterated need. He sparked it in her, and now he’s stoking the fire with every touch, every kiss. As Paco’s lips travel down her neck, she catches their reflection in the window. The image of them together with her in his arms, makes her stop. She wrenches herself out of his embrace. “I’ve got to go,” she whispers. Before Paco has a chance to respond, she’s already out the door. When Flor nears the house, she stops and leans against a large magnolia tree, slides down the trunk, and hugs her knees to her chest. Flor tries to push the image of her and Paco out of her head. He’s not the one she wants. It’s Collin. Why these men and why now? She laments. In the few short weeks she’s been here, she’s allowed herself to be consumed by longing for one and being pursued by another. Is this karma? Flor wonders. The moment she determines she doesn’t want to fall in love or become entangled in anything the universe puts not one, but two desirable men in her path. Although one doesn’t seem to want her back. Flor stands slowly, watching bees flit from flower to flower on the low hanging branches. No one thing or person is worth the energy at this point, she resolves. She’ll do as she pleases and let the chips fall where they may.

excerpt

The call in the middle of the night jolted Amy awake.

She grabbed the buzzing phone from her nightstand, and when she looked at the display, it took a moment for her sleep-muddled mind to grasp the name. Then she sat up. Her palms felt prickly and heart began to pound. Was she dreaming? She had to be. She hadn’t heard from Mikhail Zaikov in almost two years.

Before she could answer, the ringing stopped. The glowing face of her alarm clock showed that it was a little after three-thirty on Sunday…no, Monday morning. The first week of spring break. Fully awake now, she switched on the lamp and stared down at the phone. The blinking red light signaled a message. This was no dream. Misha had called her.

Why?

By mistake, of course. Butt-dials happened all the time. He must be somewhere, doing what one did at 3:30 in the morning, and had bumped his phone, causing it to accidently dial her number. A miracle he still had it, really. She’d deleted his long ago. Her curiosity was piqued, but at the foot of her bed, her sleeping cat stirred, a reminder that curiosity was bad for felines, and probably for females, too. Misha’s message would probably turn out to be noise and voices from some far-away nightclub, or worse, a bedroom. She set the unanswered phone aside, and reached for the light, when the phone buzzed again. A text, this time.

She released a bitter laugh, thinking of the last text he’d sent. The one that said good-bye. But the need to know why he was texting in the middle of the night was too strong. She opened the message.

“Bk pain vry bad. Cant move. Alone.”

The stark black words on the small gray screen brought such an onslaught of heartache, and tenderness that she wished she hadn’t looked. She was finally at the point where she could look back on their time together and remember something besides the final hurt. And now, this. She typed a response—the one he deserved. Then she read it, deleted it, and tried again. Instead of bitterness, she settled for her default, problem-solving mode.

Where R U?

His reply came seconds later. Motel. Watkins IL.

Still in Illinois. A long way from where she was now, in Shackleton, Ohio, and a very long way from where they’d lived back when things were good. She’d never heard of Watkins, and what he was doing there, she hadn’t a clue. Nor did it have any bearing on her life now. She didn’t need the frustration, or whatever else, seeing him would bring. But she stared down at the message again, unable to ignore a bitter truth.

Even after what happened between them, he’d reached out to her, because there was no one else. Alone. Misha was alone in some small town and though he’d broken her heart, now he was the one hurting.

Serves him right.

Yet the thought of him suffering in some lonely middle-of-nowhere motel, tugged at the part of her which refused to kill spiders, and always cheered for the villain’s redemption. Misha was no villain. There was goodness in him, and at one time, she’d loved him and dreamt of their future together. She knew all about his physical pain, which could be debilitating, and as an athletic trainer, her job was to help and heal.

So help and heal she would, but once she had…then she would pour out the hurt and anger over the way he’d left. How he’d humiliated her in front of her family, and even made her change the direction of her career. She’d moved on in many ways, but had never found closure. Once she’d confronted him, she would find it, and officially turn the page on Mikhail Zaikov.

Pushing away her blankets, Amy swung her bare feet to the bedroom floor, and typed a reply she knew was the right one.
