*Synopsis*

She has a secret.

I’m complicated. Not broken or ruined or running from a past I can’t face. Just complicated.

I thought my life couldn’t get any more tangled in deceit and confusion. But I hadn’t met him. I hadn't realized how far I could fall or what I'd do to get free.

He has a secret.

I’ve never pretended to be good or deserving. I chase who I want, do what I want, act how I want.

I didn’t have time to lust after a woman I had no right to lust after. I told myself to shut up and stay hidden. But then she tried to run. I’d tasted what she could offer me and damned if I would let her go.

One secret destroys them.

Ariana's Review
5 Stars!
Well, I must say I am quite impressed. I was not expecting the book to go in the direction it ended up going in the second half. The first half of the book I found completely and utterly aggravating. There was so much tension (both sexual and emotional) between Roan (Fox) and Hazel (Zel) it was well beyond infuriating! And to be honest, I felt it was a bit repetitive with all the back and forth in the beginning, and it took me a little longer than usual to get to the halfway mark. As I was reading, I was still mesmerized with her writing, but I was a little disappointed that I was not loving the story as much as I loved Pepper’s previous books. I was still figuring “Destroyed” would get a 4 star rating from me (which is really good), but I was just not IN LOVE with the characters and story like I was with Tears of Tess. HOWEVER, all that changed as I crossed the halfway mark, and I became 100% enthralled with the way the story progressed and grew. I was caught completely unprepared for the heart-wrenching emotions which hit me so sudden, and out of the blue. I found it impossible NOT to fall head over heels for Hazel, her daughter Clara, and Roan. My excitement quickly progressed, and I found myself at a point where I was unable to put down the book (until I passed out from exhaustion from reading wayyyyyy past my bedtime). With that being said, the first half got 4 stars from me, and the second half got 6 stars! What began as something which was good (to me), ended up turning into something which I felt was incredible.

"You're dying inside when I'm trying to help you live."

Roan. What to say about this man. He was THE asshole. He was fucked up in the head, a past so dark and twisted it was almost impossible to picture him being able to come into the light. But throughout the entire story, there was always that tiny spark of hope. And no matter how bad things got with him, and no matter how much you hated him, there was always the fact that he had a good heart. Roan was a good man forced to do bad things, and who had countless horrible things done to him. He wanted to be worthy of love and to be able to love others... but his past was what would continue to dictate his present. He had been stolen as a child, and turned into a ruthless killer.... an assassin. He was not supposed to feel emotion. Not supposed to feel pain. And he didn't. Not until Hazel was thrown into his life, and he started to feel again. He began to have hope. In a life which was surrounded in darkness, he had found the one speck of light. But no matter how hard he focused, and how badly he wanted to change, he was still a danger to those around him. He thought Hazel could be his cure... he was wrong, and he managed to continuously hurt the one person who had made him feel alive. I hated him... I loved him... I wanted him to hurt... I wanted him to break free and finally be happy.

"I was obsessed with finding redemption. Destroyed by love. Possessed by hope. Consumed by a past I Couldn't shake."

Hazel. She was amazing. She had been through hell and back, and was still living in hell from day to day. She was strong... so very strong. She stuck around Roan and pushed past all the pain he caused her (both physical and emotional). She thought he could be the answer to her prayers, that he could help save her daughter Clara... but she also thought she could help save him as well. She was wrong. She knew he was danger, yet she could not stay away... These two were destined to destroy each other.

"Whatever exists between us is determined to destroy me."

Clara was such a remarkable little girl. She brought love and light into a story which constantly battled the darkness. She was happy, and funny, and completely stole my heart. It was amazing how much one little girl could do to help such a badly broken man. She was the one character that binded the story together and made it what it was. Nothing would have been the same without her. Wise beyond her years, and a heart made of gold. She was like an angel who brought joy and happiness to all who encountered her. It would be impossible not to fall in love with this little girl's character.

Pepper Winters has such an amazing talent in the way she writes… not many authors can invoke such extreme emotions from their readers, and cause you to physically feel the pain and heartbreak of the story’s characters… but Pepper does just that. Not just in one story, but in each and every story she writes.
