╣Excerpt╠
“I don’t want to go crazy, Cami. I just want to experience the normal things teenagers experience. While I’m still a teenager. I’ll be nineteen next month, and I haven’t done anything! I have one year.”
Cami nodded as a slow smile spread across her face. “Kind of like a bucket list for your teen years.”
I grinned and my wet hair bounced around when I nodded emphatically. “Exactly!”
Cami jumped to her feet and started pacing the room. “That I can help with! But we should start a list right now. Write it all down, so we can mark it off as we go.”
My insides jumped and fired to life, and I got to my feet too. “That’s a great idea.”
Cami grabbed a notebook and flipped it open, then grabbed a pink Sharpie. At the top of the paper she scribbled Annie’s Bucket List. “Okay, what’s first?”
I chewed on my bottom lip and ran my hand through my damp hair. “Let’s start small. Buy makeup.”
Cami nodded and jotted it down, then said, “And some new clothes and shoes. Girly stuff.”
She wrote down, buy a dress and heels and I inwardly cringed. Wearing heels seemed a bit unrealistic, but I was determined to do this. Even if I fell out of my shoes and broke my arm in the process.
“Get highlights,” I said.
Cami giggled while she wrote. “With your hair, I’d get lowlights.”
I nodded even though I had no idea what she was talking about. She’d know better than me.
Cami looked up and raised an eyebrow. “Get your ears pierced?”
“And something else too! Like my nose or my belly button!” I was getting really excited. Bouncing around like Cami. I’d always been intrigued by the way most girls these days glinted under the lights. It was rare, especially in California, to see girls in their teens without multiple piercings. I wanted to be one of those girls.
Cami wrote it down before looking back at me. “A tattoo?”
I hadn’t even considered that one. Something inside me jumped, but with the painful way it twisted I wasn’t sure if it was fear or excitement. “I don’t know…”
“We’ll put that one on the shelf for now. What else? Just fire them off and I’ll write as fast as I can.”
I took a deep breath and went for it. She was willing to help, so I shouldn’t be scared about revealing how little I’d done. “Go on a date, go to a formal, go skinny-dipping, get drunk, have a first kiss, stay up all night, take a road trip with a group of friends.” I took a deep breath and peered at her out of the corner of my eye, but she hadn’t even blinked and she was still scribbling away. “Have sex….”
✯✯4 Learning Stars!!!✯✯This is my 2nd book by Kate Mary and it's not my last. Anybody who grew up with an overprotective parents/parent or older siblings. You will relate to Annie. I grew up with strict parents. And, even had my own list of things. But...There was certain things Annie did that would blow my mind. Have me saying "Why".
Annie grew up with her father and 4 older protective brothers. They let her do nothing. The only time she was allowed out was if she was with 1 or more of her brothers. She had her clothes picked out for her. Annie had no idea who she was. Had no idea what she liked and didn't like. She was really just lost. So, when she got into college she picked the farthest college from her dad and brothers and swore to start living for herself and figure out who she was.
Annie lucked out when she got Cami as her roommate. She was a total girly-girl. And, Annie trusted her instantly. She told Cami about never being out alone and not knowing much. They write up a list of 20 things she wants to do before she turns 20. She has a year to do them. Luckily for her Cami is down to help her do them. While showing her how to do the girly stuff like makeup, hair and dress. It should be easy. LOL
The 2 guys that Annie becomes friends with make it anything but easy. Ryan and Chris are best friends. Ryan is Cami's cousin/brother and she's good friends with Chris. The 4 of them will spend a lot of time together. It wouldn't be such a pain if they were all just friends. Both Chris & Ryan like Annie. But, Chris saw/met Annie first. Ryan backs off. Annie likes Chris. But, whenever Ryan's around she's always feeling something in her stomach that's not there when Chris is there. There is a definite chemistry between Annie & Ryan. They have more in common. But, Chris put his claim on Annie and Ryan won't loose another person.
It drove me crazy the back & forth between Ryan and Chris. Why she just didn't go with what her head and body told her. But, I kinda feel like because she was so sheltered her whole life she really didn't know how she was supposed to act. Or what feelings she should follow. The guys knew her story. Yet, guys being guys didn't make her life easier.
Annie drove me crazy at times. I get you have a list of stuff you want to do. But, she let too many people tell her when they were going to do stuff. There were times she didn't want to do what other people wanted. She never stood up for herself and said no. And, she had a year to cross of 20 things. Who said you must cross of 5 things off the first night. Seriously??!! Even with my parents being super strict I'd never be OK with leaving a bar with a random guy. ESP with being a virgin and lucky if I'd have been kissed. She was very quick to let Cami tell her what was what and use her as her real life Barbie doll. I loved Cami but if she was my friend she'd be put in her place a few times. I just thought there were times that Annie was wreckless. And, too wreckless!!
I was glad when she finally made her decision and kept it. I was glad it was the guy I liked lol. But, the guy she didn't choose. I'm not telling you who btw ;) I will tell you this. I was very disappointed! There was no real closure. Yes, there was the whole "We're friends" thing. But, we have no idea whatever happened between the guys friendship. ESP since it was such a big issue and point in the book. They're all friends & hang out still. How is that happening? I really hope in his book we get the answers to those. If you're looking for a fast paced book. This is it. Between Cami & Annie always having me laughing. To rolling my eyes at the other crazy stuff. Annie is stronger then she realized. It was nice seeing her come into her own. She came in as Annie but didn't realize who Annie was. By the end she def did. It was great to see!! I'm really looking forward to Cami and Liam story.
