Synopsis
If you're looking for a heartwarming story about a girl who falls deeply in love with a troubled boy who changes her life--a sob story with pretty metaphors and a million ways that'll tell you how "broken" she is, STOP. Don't read another word of this.
I'm not that type of girl.
My name is Emerald Anderson and I'm not going to bullshit you: I flunked out of college after my sophomore year, I've been fired from every job I've ever taken, and I've never had a fully functioning relationship in my life.
I wish I could say that I had a cheerleader in my corner, someone who says, "No, Emerald--You're great and you are good at something!" but I don't. My grandparents are completely oblivious to my life, and my mother's dying words to me were "You're going to end up just like me one day. A beautiful nothing."
She was right.
As I decide to start my life over and take two jobs that will forever change me--one from the inside, and one from the outside, I keep my mother's words close to my heart so I can keep the sexy and mysterious Carter Black away.
He's the first man who's ever pursued me, the first man who seems bent on finding out why I am the way I am, but he's wasting his time.
I'm not broken. I don't need to be fixed. I'm perfectly fine being a beautiful failure...

6 Stars!!!!!
After reading 'Beautiful Failure' I am officially a HUGE fan of Mariah Cole's writing and cannot wait to get my hands on her next book. This story was different and edgy, which was very refreshing to me. I was pretty surprised at how much I actually loved Emerald's character... let's face it, she was kind of a bitch for awhile there. But yet somehow, I still liked her from the very beginning. This was one of those books that I did not want to put down, and when it ended, I wanted to curl up under my blankets and stay there until book 2 comes out. 'Beautiful Failure' was definitely one of the more intriguing story lines I have read recently.
Emerald had quite a messed up childhood. Her mother was an escort, and was always drinking and doing drugs. She seemed to care more about herself then she did her own daughter. Her mother was always giving Emerald "rules" to live by, which were really her own screwed up ways of handling life. No mother in her right mind would push for their daughter to do those types of things (constantly drink, push her to have sex, try to get her to do drugs, tell her to not have friends, etc). She was basically taught to never fall in love. But without love in your life (whether it be friends, family, or significant other), what kind of life is that to be living?
Bitter and angry at the world after a series of events, Emerald finds herself kicked out of college, unable to hold a job for any period of time, and wanting to get the hell out of her town to pursue her dream of becoming a writer. But time and time again, she is faced with failure after failure. She begins to believe that she too is becoming a Beautiful Failure, just like her mother. But she quickly begins to question all she had ever known when she meets 2 people who will change her life forever.
Enter Carter. Carter fucking Black. Holy hell this guy is a giant ball of amazingness. He is able to take Emerald's Sarcasm and throw it right back in her face unlike anyone has ever been able to.
"For the record, Emerald--- I'm not trying to be your Prince Charming or your knight in shining armor. You're too fucked up for me to even think about saving."
Emerald has definitely met her match in Carter. If I didn't love her character so much, I would be completely and utterly jealous of her getting to be around Carter all the time. He is sexy, confident, sometimes arrogant, and at the same time an old school romantic. Throw in a bit of mysteriousness as well and you have the perfect BBF right here. If anyone finds a way to take a character out of a book and make him into a real life person, you better keep your hands off because Carter is mine!!! Seriously, how can one guy be so damn perfect in every single way??? Yes, he is the perfect BBF even though there are so many things I still want to know about him which I am realllllllly hoping are told in the next book!
"I do want to fuck you and I am going to fuck you--- in ways you can't even begin to imagine."
The story was incredibly well written, and the characters were absolutely amazing. I was so happy to have read something different than your typical romance (not that I don't absolutely love those as well), and I cannot wait to see where the story goes from here. This wasn't just girl meets boy... girl falls in love with boy... girl rides into the sunset with boy and lives happily ever after. But just be forewarned..... don't be surprised when you reach "The End" and want to throw your kindle (or nook, or book) across the room. HOLY CLIFFHANGER (or at least I thought it was a major one)! Mariah Cole left me loving her, and cursing her name all at the same time for that ending!!! Mariah has completely won me over with this story, and I am sure that many will feel the same way as I.
